Talks between Fiorentina and Sunderland over Marcos Alonso have stalled after the Black Cats were put off by La Viola's asking price for the player.

The former Real Madrid youth player spent the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland and impressed the club's boss Gus Poyet, helping in the Black Cats' successful battle against relegation from the Premier League.

Poyet has been keen to keep Alonso on a regular basis, but according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, talks are at an impasse.

Fiorentina's asking price for the left-back is currently above the amount Sunderland are willing to pay.

It had been suggested that Sunderland could use former Lazio defender Modibo Diakite as part of the transfer.

However, the possibility of that happening has also receded.

Alonso made 16 appearances in the Premier League for Poyet's men last season.
