Arsenal had a bid rejected by Sporting Lisbon for William Carvalho, with the Portuguese giants knocking back an offer which hit the €30m mark.

The Gunners moved for William to bolster their midfield, but saw their proposal fall on deaf ears, with Sporting Lisbon hoping to keep hold of the 22-year-old.

Arsene Wenger's men recently sent an offer of €30m to Lisbon for the midfielder, but it was rejected, according to Portuguese daily O Jogo.

Arsenal proposed paying for William in two €15m tranches, something which was also unacceptable to Sporting Lisbon.

The English giants have now switched their attention to Real Madrid's Sami Khedira, however there seems little doubt William was Wenger's first choice.

Sporting Lisbon are prepared to consider selling William for the right price – he has a release clause of €45m. But the payment terms from Arsenal were deemed insufficient.

Had the Gunners proposed paying the €30m in a lump sum, discussions could have continued between the two parties.

William has been consistently linked with another English club in the shape of Manchester United, with the English side having sent scouts to watch 66 per cent of Sporting Lisbon's games last season.

It is not clear whether new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will continue the Red Devils' interest.
