Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to fire the opening salvo in their bid to sign Roma forward Mattia Destro.

Spurs are keen on Destro and the club's sporting director Franco Baldini has been probing Roma about a possible deal for the 23-year-old.

Now, according to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, Spurs are preparing to lodge an offer of €25m for the Italy international.

Roma are keen to keep Destro but, in the event of a departure, are thought to value him at over €30m and it remains to be seen if Spurs will increase their offer.

Roma snapped up Destro in 2012 from Siena and the forward arrived tipped for big things.

He missed the opening 12 games of last season with a knee injury, but returned to feature in 20 Serie A games as Roma finished second.

Destro bagged 13 goals along the way, but could not earn a spot in Cesare Prandelli's Italy squad for the World Cup.

His contract with Roma runs until 2017.
