Monaco are set to step up their interest in Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski if James Rodriguez leaves for Real Madrid.

The principality outfit are thought to have thrashed out an €80m fee with Real Madrid for Rodriguez, with the Colombia international due to be signed by the Spanish giants later this week.

The deal could also include at least one player, with Monaco keen on custodian Diego Lopez.

It will also send last season's Ligue 1 runners-up scurrying to replace Rodriguez – and that is a trail which has led them to the Emirates Stadium.

According to German daily Bild, Podolski is in Monaco's sights, with the Arsenal star a favoured replacement for Rodriguez.

Podolski, who has won 115 caps for Germany and helped the country to win this summer's World Cup, is being lined up by Monaco, with the club currently making efforts to determine his availability.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could opt to cash in on Podolski for the right price, especially with Alexis Sanchez having been signed from Barcelona earlier this summer.
