Cagliari defender Danilo Avelar has committed his future to the Serie A club, despite continuing links with English side Leeds United.

The Brazilian came within a whisker of joining Leeds in the January transfer window, but eventually stayed put at Cagliari.

Again this summer he has been linked with going to Leeds, especially as the English club's president, Massimo Cellino, knows him well from his time as Cagliari owner.

But Avelar is clear that his future lies with the Rossoblu.

"I've never thought of leaving, here it is too good", he explained to the club's official site.

The defender, who can operate as a midfielder, claims to be happy with where he is currently played by the Serie A outfit.

"I started out as a midfielder, but with the passing of time I am back in defence. It is true that I give the best of myself when I go forward, but in Italy, you are asked to defend above all and this I have to improve."

And Avelar is now thinking about Cagliari's aims for the upcoming campaign.

"First we must secure safety, then we'll see.

"It's nice to dream of lofty goals, such as the Europa League, but we must be realistic and first think about staying in Serie A."
