Liverpool are closing in on the loan signing of Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo, after the youngster gave the thumbs down to joining Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger's Gunners had been chasing Manquillo, along with Liverpool, while there is also interest in the defender from Spanish sides Rayo Vallecano and Getafe, and French giants Marseille.

But according to Spanish daily AS, Liverpool are just one step away from snapping up Manquillo on loan.

Manquillo is thought to have been concerned about how much first team football he would receive at Arsenal, something which ultimately moved him away from landing at the Emirates Stadium.

And from amongst the other options, Manquillo has been drawn to Anfield as it will also offer him the opportunity to play Champions League football next term.

It is unclear whether Liverpool will have an option to sign Manquillo on a permanent basis should he impress on Merseyside.

The 20-year-old right-back helped Atletico Madrid to the Spanish title last term, while he also collected the Copa del Rey with the club in 2012/13.
