Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says the club are capable of spending £70m on a single player, if needed.

The Red Devils slumped to a seventh place finish in the Premier League last season, something which means they have no European football at Old Trafford for the forthcoming campaign.

Experienced manager Louis van Gaal has been brought in to restore Manchester United to their former glories and Woodward is clear that the financial support is there for the Dutchman to tap into.

And spending a large sum on a single player is not something which scares the Red Devils, Woodward says.

"Of course it's in our capabilities", he told the BBC, when asked if they could afford a fee of £70m on a single player.

"We are not afraid of spending significant amounts of money in the transfer market", Woodward continued.

"Whether it's a record or not doesn't really resonate with us."

Manchester United have already splashed some cash this summer, paying a combined £56m to snap up left-back Luke Shaw and midfielder Ander Herrera.
