Chievo Verona are on the verge of winning the race to sign centre-back Alessandro Gamberini, seeing off a challenge from Leeds United for the Napoli man.

Chievo had been going head to head with Leeds for the 32-year-old, who is surplus to requirements at Napoli and looking to head elsewhere.

And according to Verona-based daily Il Corriere di Verona, Chievo have emerged victorious, with Gamberini preferring to join them ahead of Leeds.

The defender, who last represented Italy at international level in 2011, is now poised over a three-year contact with Chievo.

The switch will keep Gamberini in Serie A, thought to be a key consideration for the defender, after he spent last term on loan at Genoa.
