Former England international Bryan Robson has backed Wayne Rooney to replace Steven Gerrard as the Three Lions captain.

The place was left vacant on Monday after the veteran midfielder stepped down from his role, announcing his retirement.

Many experts have already voiced their opinion about possible replacements for Gerrard and Robson is among those backing the Manchester United number 10 to be a contender.

The former midfielder added that Rooney's prior experience of having taken up the skipper's armband will be helpful in making him a permanent solution for the post.

"Wayne has captained Manchester United and England. He knows what it's about", Robson was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Wayne has proved he is our best player.

"He leads by example. He works really hard for the team.

"No matter what position the coach wants him to play, Wayne wants to do the job.

"That is a good sign for a captain. If it was Wayne I would have no doubts about him being captain."
