Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has revealed that he is looking forward to playing alongside the club’s summer signing Lazar Markovic.

The young Serbian winger joined the Reds on a long-term deal from Benfica last week for a fee of €25m.

And despite Markovic training on just a handful of occasions for his new employers, Allen is convinced about the qualities the 20-year-old will bring to Liverpool.

"Obviously he has only done a couple of sessions", the Welshman told his club’s official site.

"But straight away, you can see the quality that he brings. I'm really excited to get the chance to play with him and train alongside him as well."

Apart from Markovic, Liverpool have roped in Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can this summer, with the quartet travelling to the United States for the Merseyside giants’ pre-season tour.

Allen welcomed the new signings, but the 24-year-old was quick to add that the competition for places will heat up with the fresh arrivals.

"It has certainly added to the competition for places in the team. It's always a good thing, it always brings the best out of everyone”, he added.

"We're delighted to welcome them in. They have settled straight in and I think they're looking forward to the matches on this tour."

Liverpool, who finished second in the Premier League last season, are also close to wrapping up a deal for French forward Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers.
