Leeds United defender Scott Wootton is ready to fight for a place in the starting eleven for the first game of the season.

Leeds finished 15th in the Championship table on 57 points in 2013/14 and replaced manager Brian McDermott with head coach David Hockaday earlier this summer.

“It is a battle at the moment”, Wootton told LUTV, pointing to the fight for places.

The former Manchester United defender admits that there is fierce competition for a place at the heart of the defence in the team.

“There are three of us, me, Jason Pearce, Tom Lees.

“I am not sure what formation we are going to play. Probably at the moment we will play a back four so there are two out of three at the moment.”

And Wootton is relishing the challenge for places in the starting eleven and feels that he is ready to fight for his place in the squad.

“I think it’s good for competition.

"Pearce and Lees are very good players so it will be a tough battle between us and I am looking forward to it.”

Wootton joined Leeds from Manchester United last summer for a transfer fee of £1m on a three-year contract.

Leeds will start their Championship campaign away from home against Milwall next month.
