Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that his team are short of defenders after being forced to field skipper Darren Fletcher in an unfamiliar position for the match against LA Galaxy last night.

Van Gaal's first match in charge went well as his team managed to maintain a clean sheet and scored seven goals against the MLS side.

However, the team's formation was unusual as the Dutch manager had to maintain a three-man defence when he made a number of changes, leaving Fletcher in an unfamiliar role.

Following the departure of veteran defenders Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, options have been limited, a problem that Van Gaal readily concedes exists.

"I have no more defenders", Van Gaal told his club's official website.

"So I have to pick a player [Fletcher] who can do the job but he is not so suitable for this position."

The Red Devils will play AS Roma in their second pre-season friendly on Saturday before taking on Inter Milan on 30th July and Real Madrid in early August.
