Louis van Gaal feels changing the system immediately at Manchester United was important as he doesn’t have the time to try different formations.

The Red Devils registered a comfortable 7-0 win over LA Galaxy last night at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California.

It was Van Gaal’s first game in charge of the 20-time English champions and the Dutch manager introduced the system of playing three at the back.

“When you want to change a system, you must start at once”, the Dutchman told the club’s official site. “We don’t have time to prepare for other things.”

The former Ajax manager feels that he can always switch to a traditional back four, but playing three at the back allows him to utilise Manchester United’s attacking talents.

“The other system they can play is 4-3-3 and they have played it for many years. I can change it back if it doesn’t work.

“With the quality of the players we have, I can play 4-3-3 with three strikers on the bench, but I want to play with two strikers.”

The 62-year-old also feels that the squad lacks balance and he needed to adopt a system that allowed him to utilise the personnel at his disposal.

“We have four number 10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes. I have decided to play this system because of the quality of the players. But if we lose, I can change back to another system.”

Manchester United will next take on AS Roma in a pre-season friendly on Saturday at the Sports Authority field, Denver.
