West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell believes that pre-season is always important for players to get into the right shape ahead of a gruelling season.

Cresswell's side were beaten 2-1 by A-League outfit Wellington Phoenix in the opening match of their two-game tour of New Zealand.

However, the 24-year-old refuses to look at the match with disappointment and wants to take the positives out of it.

The critical issue that he believes needs attention at this point in time is to maintain a fitness level which will help them become as fit as possible before the start of the domestic season.

"Pre-season is always about getting yourselves right and working on your fitness", Cresswell told his club's official site.

"It's always nice to get into form, but the main thing is obviously fitness.

"There are still three or four games left until the start of the season, so we hope it will come as we get as fit as we can."

Cresswell arrived at West Ham this month from Championship side Ipswich Town and has been impressive in all the three appearances he has made for the club so far.

The Hammers take on Sydney FC in their second pre-season friendly on Saturday.
