West Ham have suffered a blow with the news that Andy Carroll could be out for up to four months with an ankle injury.

The former Liverpool striker, who cost the Hammers £15m to sign on a permanent basis from Liverpool last year, picked up the knock in training.

He complained of a sore ankle, which has now been diagnosed as torn ligaments and will require surgery.

The 25-year-old is now due to go under the knife tomorrow in the United States.

Carroll missed the majority of last season with a heel injury and managed just 15 Premier League appearances for the Hammers.

The striker played no part in West Ham's 2-1 friendly loss to Wellington Phoenix earlier this week.

He will now aim to work on his recovery and aim to return to action before Christmas.
