Former Chelsea and Valencia boss Claudio Ranieri has been appointed the new manager of the Greece national team.

Portuguese tactician Fernando Santos stood down from his role as Greece coach following the World Cup, which saw the country reach the last 16.

And Ranieri, who was available following his sacking by Monaco earlier this summer, has been handed the reins.

The Italian has signed a two-year contract with Greece, with the aim of taking the country to the 2016 European Championship.

The post will be the 62-year-old's first in charge of a national team, following a career which has seen him take in numerous jobs at club level.

Ranieri has notably bossed Napoli, Fiorentina, Juventus, Roma and Inter in his native Italy, while he has coached Valencia and Atletico Madrid in Spain, along with Chelsea in England.

The Italian led Monaco to second spot in Ligue 1 last term, but that was not enough to keep his job.
