Lazio are pushing hard to win the race for Netherlands international Stefan de Vrij after losing out on Davide Astori to city rivals Roma.

De Vrij has just one year left on his contract with Feyenoord and has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United, now bossed by former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal.

Lazio are desperate to avoid losing out on another defensive target and, according to Sky Italia, are working overtime to win the race for De Vrij.

The Serie A club are hoping that De Vrij will force an exit from Feyenoord upon his return from holiday, as they believe the Dutchman is keen to move to Italy.

Feyenoord are thought to want around the €9m mark for the centre-back, while Lazio have so far refused to budge over €7m.

De Vrij was in action at the recently concluded World Cup with the Netherlands and helped Van Gaal's side to a finish of third in the tournament.

Feyenoord are all but resigned to losing the defender this summer, but are determined to extract the maximum value from his departure.
