Liverpool have been dealt an injury blow with the news that midfielder Adam Lallana will miss the start of the new season.

The Reds have confirmed that Lallana picked up a knee injury during training at the club's base in Boston, the United States, and now requires a period of up to six weeks out of action.

Lallana has hurt his lateral collateral ligament, but following a scan, Liverpool have decided the injury does not need surgery.

The midfielder is still set to miss the start of the 2014/15 campaign for his new club though.

Liverpool snapped up Lallana from Southampton earlier this summer for a fee in the region of £25m.

The midfielder was part of Roy Hodgson's England squad at the World Cup, but could not help the Three Lions progress beyond the group stage.

He is now due to be further assessed in the United States and then upon the side's return to Liverpool.
