AS Monaco are close to sealing a deal for defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from fellow Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

The French Under-18 international has been closely watched by a number of top European clubs over the course of last season.

English Premier League giants Liverpool were keen to sign the youngster this summer and were exploring options to bring him to England.

However, Monaco have edged ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Bakayoko and have agreed an €8m fee with Rennes; Rennes have confirmed that the player is now undergoing a medical at the Stade Louis II.

The 19-year-old Frenchman will sign a five-year contract with the principality club and the deal is expected to be announced in the coming hours, with only the final details of the move to be completed.
