Petr Cech has explained that he is confident about impressing Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and retaining his spot as the club’s number one choice between the sticks next season.

With Belgian custodian Thibaut Courtois returning to Stamford Bridge this summer after spending three successful loan seasons at Atletico Madrid, the competition to become the club’s first-choice shot-stopper will considerably increase next season.

And Courtois is tipped to become the club’s primary goalkeeper due to his young age and much-heralded potential.

However Cech, who pointed out that he dislodged favourite Carlo Cudicini in becoming the first-choice goalkeeper when he first arrived at the club in 2004, insisted he is unfazed by the competition and is focused on maintaining his high standards.

“I always give my best. That’s all I can do. I will do my best, and I will do everything I can to be as ready as possible for when the season starts”, the Czech Republic international told his club’s official site.

“Jose Mourinho will make the choice how his team is going to look for the first game. It’s up to us players to show that we are ready to play and make him pick us.

“I’m not different; I’m doing everything to make him pick me. I don’t want to be on the bench and as I said I will do everything not to be. I don’t want to talk about ifs or buts though, let’s see.

“I’m going day by day and we will see what is going to happen. All I have in my control is my performance on the pitch and the way I prepare. Anything else is not in my hands.

“When I joined it was the same thing. Carlo [Cudicini] was the favourite to be in goal for the first game and I managed to get there ahead of him.

“Obviously with my performances and my work I managed to persuade the manager to put me in goal for that first game and it kicked off from there. I will try to do the same this year.”

Cech, who has a further two years left on his current contract with Chelsea, has amassed 478 appearances in all competitions for the club, keeping 220 clean sheets.
