Aston Villa centre-back Philippe Senderos has explained that he is relishing the prospect of playing alongside Ron Vlaar next season.

The Netherlands international was in fine form at the World Cup and helped his nation to finish in third spot in Brazil.

Vlaar was rock-solid at the heart of the Oranje’s defence throughout the course of the campaign and earned plenty of plaudits for his impressive displays.

And Senderos, who believes Vlaar was the best defender at the World Cup, insisted that he is looking forward to linking up with the 29-year-old in the upcoming campaign.

"Ron was massive for the Netherlands. I think he had maybe the best tournament of all the defenders out there”, the Swiss defender explained to his club’s official site.

"He was brilliant and I'm looking forward to having him back in the group. First though, he deserves a good break of course.

"But, eventually, having Ron back will be fantastic. I'm looking forward to playing with him. He's a top player.

"There is competition and that is important. You want competition for places in every position. It will only make us better."

Senderos, who himself represented Switzerland at the World Cup, joined the Villains from Valencia this summer.

The defender has experience of playing in the Premier League, having featured for Arsenal, Everton and Fulham earlier in his career.
