Manchester United’s custodian David de Gea admits that pre-season can be tough on footballers as they look to build their fitness for the upcoming campaign.

The Red Devils made a flying start to their pre-season tour with a thumping 7-0 win over LA Galaxy in Pasadena on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old said that although pre-season tours can be an enjoyable time for footballers, they do need to put in some serious work to build their fitness for the next campaign.

He also added that it will be a good test for the squad when they take on some big European teams in the International Champions Cup before they return to England for the start of the new campaign next month.

"While pre-season tours may be quite enjoyable, there can also be a lot of suffering", the Spaniard told the club’s official site.

"They are hard; we need them to improve our match fitness before the upcoming season and these games against some big teams will allow us to do that."
