Brendan Rodgers believes Steven Gerrard will prolong his Liverpool career following his retirement from international football earlier in the week.

The 34-year-old called time on his England career, which spanned over 14 years, after the Three Lions crashed out of the group stage of the World Cup in Brazil.

The Liverpool legend, who earned 114 caps for England between 2000 and 2014, netted 21 international goals, and is the third-most capped player for the nation after Peter Shilton and David Beckham.

And Reds boss Rodgers believes international retirement will help Gerrard to remain fresh and extend his Liverpool career beyond this season.

"I am very happy that Steven is now going to commit to Liverpool and I am sure that is something that we will look at", the manager told his club’s official site.

"He is in real good condition and I'm sure it is something that will happen at some point. I know that Steven can continue to play on beyond this season. I have always said that.

"Now he doesn't have international football, he will have that freshness. I think it is something that will be looked at by the club."

Gerrard, who has amassed 669 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, has a further year left on his present contract with the Anfield outfit.
