Sunderland are on the verge of signing Chelsea’s Dutch left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The Dutchman has only one year left on his contract with the Blues and spent the last two-and-a-half seasons on loan to Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem.

Sunderland are in the market to sign a full-back after Marcos Alonso, who made 20 appearances last season, returned to his parent club Fiorentina this summer; the Stadium of Light side have been trying to sign Alonso permanently, but have struggled to do a deal.

And now the Black Cats are close to agreeing a fee with Chelsea for Van Aanholt, according to the BBC.

The 23-year-old has made only eight appearances for Chelsea and had loan spells at Wigan, Leicester City, Newcastle United and Coventry City.

Sunderland finished 14th on 38 points in the league last season and will start their campaign away from home against West Brom next month.
