Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has explained that it was a good experience for him to have played in an unusual position during their first pre-season friendly against LA Galaxy.

The Red Devils were impressive as they managed a clean sheet in spite of playing Fletcher in an unfamiliar position in defence.

Though manager Louis van Gaal himself had conceded that he had difficulties in fielding a defence due to the unavailability of players, the midfielder, who was named skipper for the match, adds that he enjoyed his new role and being at the back was beneficial.

“It was a good experience, I have done it before and we had worked on it in training", Fletcher told his club's official site.

"But it does help when you’re in a back three. Plus, Michael [Keane] and Tyler [Blackett] beside me were excellent so it helped a lot."

Drawing reference from earlier matches in his career, when he played at the back, the 30-year-old said that his learning capabilities will help him improve in the role if he has to fill it again in future.

“I have actually played there before, when we went away to Wolfsburg in the Champions League.

"I played in a back three with a makeshift defence, but this has been a case of learning a lot quickly and I am sure we are going to be improving as well the more we practice it."
