Louis van Gaal will not be drawn into responding to Jose Mourinho's comments on Luke Shaw in public, instead insisting he will have a private word with the Chelsea boss.

Mourinho has suggested that Van Gaal's Manchester United are paying summer signing Shaw too much, wages which had they been met at Chelsea, would have resulted in a dressing room rebellion.

For Van Gaal, who readily admits he did not do the deal for Shaw, merely giving the green light to a capture already arranged before his arrival at Old Trafford, responding to Mourinho in public is not needed.

The 62-year-old was asked about Mourinho's comments and was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur: "I did not come here to answer that.

"I believe that I do not need to discuss this kind of thing with the media.

"It is better to discuss this with Jose."

Van Gaal knows Mourinho well, with the Portuguese having worked under the Dutchman at Barcelona.

The two also locked horns in the 2010 Champions League final, when Mourinho's Inter beat Van Gaal's Bayern Munich.
