Manchester United starlet Jesse Lingard admits he is encouraged by the appointment of Louis van Gaal as the club's manager, knowing full well that the Dutchman is not afraid of throwing young players into the fray.

Lingard spent time on loan last term with Championship sides Birmingham City and Brighton, and was brought off the bench by Van Gaal in Manchester United's 3-2 International Champions Cup win over Roma yesterday.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is looking to impress Van Gaal, sure that if he does the former Bayern Munich coach will give him a first team chance.

"We knew about the manager's track record before he came to the club and how he promotes youth", Lingard told the club's site.

"You've got to wait for your chance but make sure you take it when you get it.

"All the youngsters have been doing well and most have had a run-out so we're all looking to progress from there."

Lingard also praised Van Gaal's training sessions, revealing that new items have been on the agenda, something which has added a refreshing element to the mix.

"Training has been hard work but everyone has enjoyed it. We've been working on some new things which is good for us.

"We're still adapting to how the manager wants to us to play and his structure but that's something we're enjoying."
