Paris Saint-Germain may have to sacrifice one of their stars in order to complete a deal for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria.

The French champions have been stung by UEFA's financial fair play rules, already having been slapped with a fine of €60m and restricted to naming only a 21-man squad for the forthcoming Champions League.

The club are restricting spending this summer to remain within UEFA's rules, something which recently led them to sign right-back Serge Aurier on a season-long loan from Toulouse, with a mandatory purchase option, effectively postponing payment of the €9.5m fee until next summer.

According to French sports daily L'Equipe, PSG are looking at repeating the formula to sign Di Maria but, with Real Madrid not yet sure to accept, a substantial player sale may be needed to allow the Ligue 1 side to sign the winger in a conventional transfer deal.

The two names on PSG's list as potential sales are striker Edinson Cavani, who has been strongly linked with Manchester United, and winger-cum-forward Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Selling Cavani would generate more funds to use for the purchase of Di Maria, but it remains to be seen what course of action PSG will take.

The French champions are still hoping Real Madrid can be persuaded to allow Di Maria to head to the Parc des Prince on a season-long loan with a mandatory purchase option, with even a €10m loan fee a possibility to make the move happen.
