Belgium international Jan Vertonghen is set to sign a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur and sees the club's offer as a vote of confidence in his talents.

Vertonghen's performances for Belgium at the World Cup saw him linked with a switch to Barcelona this summer, but Spurs are desperate to keep hold of the former Ajax man.

He is due to join up with his Spurs team-mates on Monday, following an extended break due to his World Cup efforts. And Vertonghen will arrive with a spring in his step.

"It goes without saying that I would like to stay at Tottenham", he told Radio 1.

"I still had a four-year contract.

"I see the offer of a new five-year contract as a great sign of confidence."

When Vertonghen returns to training with Tottenham, he is determined to take things step by step, with the first item on the agenda having an ankle injury checked.

"I went into the World Cup match against Argentina with an ankle injury. What I want to do is treat it carefully because I definitely want to avoid a season like the last one where I was suffering with one injury after another."
