Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has apologised after he was found singing an insulting anti-Borussia Dortmund chant in a video.

In the video, which went viral on the internet, the 29-year-old sang a popular song amongst the Bavarian fans in a bar in Munich.

However Schweinsteiger, who is friends with Dortmund’s Kevin Grosskreutz, was quick to issue an apology to the Westphalian club after the footage emerged.

"I would like to apologise for this", he said via his personal page on Facebook.

"Of course I don't want to make anything out to be better than it actually is, it was only a well-known fans' song, although I didn't mean to insult anybody with the swear word.

"I get on well with all of Dortmund's players, particularly with Kevin Grosskreutz. It was just an unfortunate situation."

Grosskreutz, who was in Germany’s World Cup winning squad alongside Schweinsteiger, was not amused with his compatriot’s behavior. But the 26-year-old accepted the Bayern Munich player’s apology, in part due to the positive experienced he has had alongside the midfielder.

"It wasn't a cool thing to do, but I can understand his explanation and I'm never going to forget all of the good things he's done for me", the Dortmund defender wrote on his Facebook page.

Schweinsteiger, who has thus far amassed 472 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich, has been tipped to become Germany’s next captain, following the retirement of Philipp Lahm.
