Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is of the opinion that the acquisition of Dejan Lovren from Southampton is a “very important signing” for the Merseyside giants.

The Reds finished the 2013/14 Premier League campaign in second spot, but conceded 50 goals, the most amongst the top five clubs.

However, the signing of Lovren is expected to shore up Liverpool’s backline for the upcoming season.

And Rodgers feels Lovren, who will join his new team-mates in the United States for their pre-season tour, fits Liverpool’s profile completely.

"This is a very important signing for us and I'm delighted it's completed so Dejan can join up with us on our US tour", the manager explained to his club’s official site.

"He is a commanding and powerful presence and clearly has leadership skills, which is important; he fits the profile of player we are looking for.”

Rodgers further insisted that he believes Lovren, who represented Croatia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, is yet to reach his peak, with the defender aged 25 years old.

"He is still relatively young, so his peak years are ahead of him and I believe he will improve and progress even further with us”, he added.

"I'm looking forward to him arriving and working with us as we continue our preparations for the new season."

Lovren is Liverpool’s fifth summer signing, following the footsteps of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic into Anfield.
