Lazio are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Stefan de Vrij from Feyenoord.

The defender impressed in Holland’s third place finish in the World Cup in Brazil and a number of clubs were interested in signing him, including Manchester United.

Louis van Gaal was keen to bring the Dutch defender with him to Old Trafford, but it seems Lazio have left the Red Devils on the wayside in the race to sign De Vrij.

The Italian club have agreed a fee of around €8.5m with Feyenoord for the services of the 22-year-old, according to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset.

De Vrij will fly down to Rome later today to undergo a medical and sign a five-year contract with Lazio worth €1.3m per season.

Despite his young age, the Dutchman was one of the mainstays of Van Gaal’s Netherlands team and it remains to be seen whether the former Ajax manager makes a last ditch effort to sign the defender.

At 22, De Vrij made 154 appearances for Feyenoord and also captained the club for a short period in the 2012/13 season.
