Former Manchester United man Denis Irwin feels that left-back Luke Shaw is lucky that he is under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal so early in his career.

Shaw completed his switch from Southampton to Manchester United last month for a reported fee of £27m and signed a four-year contract with the club.

Irwin feels that the 19-year-old is lucky to be under the guidance of Van Gaal at such a crucial juncture of his career.

“He’ll be learning an awful lot from the new coach. To be coached by Louis van Gaal at the age of 19 is great. He’s only going to get better and better”, the 48-year-old ex-full-back told the club’s official site.

The former Irish international has advised the young full-back to put in the hard yards and listen to what his coach says.

He also added that it is important to focus hard on his football as at Shaw’s age distractions are only a step away.

“My advice is just to listen and learn and work as hard as possible”, Irwin said.

“Get your head down and give everything. That’s all that any coach demands. It’s also important to focus on the football because it’s easy to be distracted when you’re 18 or 19.”

Shaw has already played two halves of football in Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States and is expected to feature against Inter Milan on Tuesday.
