Manchester United have confirmed that Rafael will miss the rest of the club's pre-season tour of the United States due to a groin injury.

The Brazilian picked up the injury during a training session in Denver on Friday night and missed the Red Devils’ 3-2 triumph over Roma at the weekend.

Rafael, who played the second 45 minutes against LA Galaxy on Wednesday, has already returned to Manchester in order to continue his treatment and be fit for the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

A statement on the club’s official site read, “Rafael has returned to Manchester to continue treatment on the groin injury sustained in training in Denver.

“As he was unlikely to participate in the remaining tour games, returning to the Aon Training Complex affords the best overall option for his recovery in time to continue preseason preparation when the team returns.”

Rafael, who has a further two years left on his current contract with Manchester United, suffered an injury-hit campaign last season, where he made just 19 Premier League appearances.

The full-back joined the Old Trafford outfit from Fluminense’s youth set-up in 2008, and has thus far amassed 159 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League side.
