Napoli have played down speculation that they could snap up Marouane Fellaini from Manchester United.

It was claimed earlier today that the Serie A club's sporting director Riccardo Bigon had been spotted deep in conversation with Fellaini and two agents.

And while Bigon was briefly in Fellaini's native Belgium yesterday, on a stopover on the way to Germany, the club have denied talk of a meeting with the midfielder, according to Sky Italia.

Last season's Coppa Italia winners are hunting a new midfielder, but a move for Fellaini is considered difficult to do on account of the player's high salary and probable large asking price.

Bigon though is working on a midfield arrival and were Manchester United to signal a willingness to contribute to part of Fellaini's salary along with sanctioning a loan, the former Everton man could become a realistic target for the Azzurri.

Manchester United snapped Fellaini up last summer from Everton for £27.5m, the midfielder proving to be the centrepiece of former manager David Moyes' business.

The Belgian endured a difficult campaign at Old Trafford last term however, seeing his performances criticised and then watching as Moyes was sacked.
