Initial negotiations between Borussia Dortmund and Marco Reus over a new and improved contract have been unsuccessful so far, according to German daily Bild, news which will be eagerly digested by his suitors.

Reus has three years left on his current deal with Dortmund and it contains a buy-out clause of €35m, which can be activated next summer.

Manchester United and Barcelona have been consistently linked with moving to sign the German attacking midfielder, but have not a made move for him this summer, well aware he could be available for just €35m in one year.

He will be 26 next summer and his buy-out clause will make him a hot property in the transfer market, which is something Dortmund are trying to prevent.

The BVB are desperate to remove the €35m buy-out clause from his contract and are willing to offer an improved deal to the 25-year-old, upping his wages from €5m to €7m.

However, initial negotiations between the club and the player which took place earlier this year have failed to produce any results.

Dortmund will keep negotiating with Reus’ representatives throughout this year and try to make him a sign a new contract, which will not have the buy-out clause.

Reus has clocked up 93 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 42 goals and providing 39 assists.
