Sunderland are closing in on Lazio right-back Luis Pedro Cavanda, who does not fit into the plans of new coach Stefano Pioli.

The 23-year-old Belgian has been targeted by Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, who is keen to take him to the Stadium of Light this summer.

According to Sky Italia, the Black Cats are now close to reaching an agreement with Lazio which would see the former Standard Liege youth product head to England.

Cavanda was snapped up by Lazio from Standard Liege in 2007 and made his senior team breakthrough in Italy in 2009 in the Europa League.

The defender has had loan spells with both Torino and Bari, and clocked up 19 appearances in Serie A for Lazio last term.
