Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has admitted that he wanted to take Luka Modric to Stamford Bridge, but revealed the Croatian midfielder was unwilling to quit Real Madrid.

Mourinho signed Modric for Real Madrid during his time in charge at the Bernabeu and was keen for a reunion to take place at Chelsea.

But the former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker does not want to leave the European champions and is content to remain at Real Madrid, with not even Mourinho able to convince him to change his mind.

"I called Luka personally, but he would not come to Chelsea because he is happy in Madrid", Mourinho was quoted as saying by French outlet Maxifoot.

Modric was a fixture in Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid team last term, clocking up 34 appearances in La Liga, and helping Los Blancos to a Copa del Rey and Champions League double.
