Manchester United legend Paul Scholes does not expect to become part of Louis van Gaal's coaching staff at Old Trafford and insists the Dutchman does not need to call him.

Scholes returned to Manchester United to help Ryan Giggs for the final four games of last term, following the sacking of David Moyes as manager.

Van Gaal has suggested he will find a role for Scholes on his coaching staff, but the 39-year-old, who is now doing TV work, feels it is too late for him to change his focus to the Red Devils.

"It's probably a bit too late now", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I couldn't wait around forever. I had the offers from television, I had to make my mind up if I wanted to take them on.

"Whether something might come from United in the future, I don't know, but it is not something I'm waiting for.

"I have not spoken to the new manager and there is no need for him to speak to me really.

"I only helped Ryan for a few weeks at the end of the season and I wasn't on a contract.

"I didn't have a job with the club and that is no different now", Scholes concluded.
