Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was happy with Wilfried Zaha‘s display against Inter Milan last night, but insisted that the youngster still has to compete for his place in the squad.

The 21-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at now relegated Cardiff City, came on as a second half substitute during the Red Devils’ 5-3 penalty shoot-out win over the Italian side in the International Champions Cup.

Despite failing to find the back of the net, Zaha put in an impressive performance in his first game of the tournament.

However, Van Gaal is still not convinced about the starlet’s place in his squad, as he already has an abundance of attacking options.

"I was pleased with Wilfried's performance but we have to wait and see”, the Dutchman told his club’s official site.

“He has a lot of competition with the other strikers."

Van Gaal also lauded another of his second half substitutes, Luke Shaw, who featured against Inter Milan due to Reece James’ injury.

The 19-year-old, who joined Manchester United from Southampton in the summer, worked tirelessly despite being not fully fit.

"Luke is working very hard and he was lucky because normally I would have played our friend Reece James, but he was a little but injured”, he added.

"And so I asked him in spite of a very heavy training session this morning and I think he did very well.”
