Manchester United’s Luke Shaw agrees with Louis van Gaal’s assessment of him being not fit enough for the role the Dutchman wants him to play in the team.

Van Gaal revealed yesterday that Shaw is not at his peak condition and needs to get fitter to play the role he wants the England international to play in his system.

"Luke Shaw is okay. I am a coach who looks at what individual players need and I think he needs to be fit, but he is not very fit”, Van Gaal had said.

"Therefore he cannot perform what I want, so first he has to be fit and has to train individually.”

Shaw feels that he is fit but agrees with the Dutchman’s assessment that he is not at the level required by the manager.

He has further stressed that he is working on his fitness and will soon get back to his peak condition.

"To play in this formation you have to be really fit. I am fit but I am not at the high level he demands", the full-back was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I have got to get fitter to get up and down. It's something I have got to work on."

Shaw joined the club last month from Southampton for a reported fee of £27m on a four-year contract.
