Everton playmaker Ross Barkley has hailed manager Roberto Martinez, who he believes has been crucial to his progress.

The Spanish manager took charge of the Toffees at the start of last season and was instrumental in guiding his team to an improved fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

It was in fact under Martinez that Barkley booked a spot in Roy Hodgson's England World Cup squad, having managed a total of 38 appearances last term and scoring seven goals.

He therefore thanks the former Wigan boss for providing him with the opportunity to express himself as an Everton player.

The highly-rated England international signed a new four-year contract with the Toffees yesterday, ending all speculation about his future, with Liverpool and Manchester United linked.
