Borussia Dortmund skipper Sebastian Kehl has stepped down from his role as he plans to retire from football after the end of next season.

The veteran midfielder has been at the club since 2001, having managed a total of 253 Bundesliga appearances and scored 20 goals.

Announcing his plans, the 34-year-old said that he would prefer to hand over the role to a suitable person now, so that he is still there to offer any kind of support that his successor might need during the initial days.

"This important role has filled me with enjoyment and pride", Kehl said via his club's site.
