Arsenal new boy Calum Chambers has revealed that his decision to move from midfield to right-back was meant to assist his progress as a player.

Since his debut as a Southampton player in 2012, the youngster managed a total of 21 league appearances for the Saints and was impressive enough to have caught Arsene Wenger's attention, managing to secure a move to Emirates Stadium this summer for £16m.

The player himself credits his decision to change position as a turning point in his career, which helped him secure a first-team place at Southampton.

“I was a midfielder about a year and a half ago for [Southampton] Under-21s", Chambers told Arsenal's site.

"I saw an opportunity in the first team at right-back and thought that for my progress it would be best to move there."

The 19-year-old also revealed that he brought in all his skills learnt while playing in midfield to aid in his progress as a right-back.

"I used everything I learnt in midfield like first touch, scanning and all that and brought it into [playing as a] right back.

"I learnt how to play there with the Under-21s and went through each game afterwards with the coaches and worked on little bits and it just went from there.”
