Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he wants Jordan Henderson to score at least 10 goals in the upcoming campaign.

The midfielder, who netted in the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Manchester City in the International Champions Cup last night, a game the Merseyside giants won 3-1 on penalties, scored five goals in 40 appearances in all competitions last term.

But Rodgers feels Henderson possesses the quality to breach opposition defensive lines and hence backed the England international to double his goalscoring tally in the 2014/15 campaign.

The Liverpool boss, who admitted that the 24-year-old is an unselfish team player, however wants the former Sunderland midfielder to “get into the box” more often this term.

"That's the objective for Jordan [to get more goals]", Rodgers explained to his club’s official site.

"The finish he produced to get the equaliser, he does that day in, day out in training.

"He's a player that is so fit and strong, and he's such a team player – he does a lot of unselfish work. This year we're asking him to get more into the box.

"I thought he had more opportunities when he played just around the corner [of the striker] in the last 20 minutes of the game – he was able to time his runs better going forward and he got in a few times.

“That's his strength – he can really penetrate the defensive line. He's an athlete and can run all day.

“I would expect him to be getting up to 10 goals this season because he has the quality and tactical awareness to arrive into the area to do that."

Henderson, who has a further two years left on his current contract with Liverpool, has thus far scored 13 goals in 132 appearances for the club.
