Louis van Gaal has insisted that he is relishing the challenge of guiding Manchester United against European heavyweights in the International Champions Cup.

The Red Devils, who have already beaten Serie A giants Roma and Inter Milan in the competition, will next face Champions League holders Real Madrid on Saturday, and a positive result against Los Blancos will enable the Premier League outfit to clinch a place in the final of the pre-season tournament.

And Van Gaal is pleased in the manner in which Manchester United have adapted to his style and system in the United States, as the Dutchman feels good performances against the cream of Europe will boost his side’s confidence ahead of the upcoming season.

"I’m very pleased. It’s the third match and we make big steps. I’m very pleased”, he told MUTV.

“Of course, it gives confidence to the players and that’s the most important thing. We are playing a new system and they adapt very quickly.

"Furthermore, we are up against AS Roma, second in the Italian league, and Inter, third in the Italian league.

“It is not a little club that we have to beat and now it's Real Madrid. It’s nice to play against such teams and that you can show that you are at least equal."

Manchester United, who finished seventh in the Premier League last term, will not be competing on the European front in the 2014/15 campaign.
