Bayer Leverkusen are looking to sign Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos from Schalke on a loan deal.

With his star on the rise, the defender was widely linked with a move away from Schalke last summer and a number of top European clubs were interested in signing him.

However, he suffered a career-threatening knee injury last year and made only four first team league appearances for the German club.

The injury seemed to have derailed his progress and Papadopoulos’ position in the Schalke squad is under a cloud.

Leverkusen are ready to provide a new lease of life to the defender’s career and are interested in signing him on a season-long loan deal from Schalke, according to Bild.

Leverkusen feel that Papadopoulos still has much potential and are ready to take a gamble on the injury-stricken defender.

Before the injury derailed the 22-year-old’s progress, the defender was a mainstay in Schalke’s starting eleven and has already made 97 appearances for the club in his young career.
