Former Aston Villa defender and Sweden international Olof Mellberg has announced his retirement.

The 36-year-old, who quit international football after 2012 European Championship, ended his contract with Danish giants FC Copenhagen yesterday.




And the centre-back insisted it was the last professional contract of his 18-year playing career.

"Today [Thursday] I ended my contract with FC Copenhagen, which will be the last in my football career", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.
 


Mellberg, who began his playing career at Degerfors IF, joined Aston Villa from Racing Santander in 2001.

He made 244 appearances in all competitions for the Villains before leaving for Italian giants Juventus in 2008.

The defender, who earned 117 caps for Sweden between 2000 and 2012, also played for Olympiacos, Villarreal and AIK Stockholm.

Mellberg , who won league titles at AIK Stockholm and Olympiacos, joined FC Copenhagen from Villarreal last summer.
