James Milner has declared that Manchester City will do their best to retain the Premier League title in the upcoming season, but knows it will be a tight race for the crown.

The Citizens won their second league title in three seasons last term after they finished the 2013/14 campaign on 86 points, just two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, who were favourites to win the title with three games remaining in the season.

And with the rival teams strengthening their squads in the summer, Milner predicts another close race for the nation’s top domestic tournament.

However, the England international was quick to add that Manchester City will be better-placed to defend the Premier League title once their own summer recruits settle into life at the Etihad Stadium.

“We know how hard it's going to be and we know how strong the other teams are and they've strengthened again but it's up to us to go again and try to retain the title”, Milner explained to his club’s official site.

"It'll be tight; it was very competitive last year and I’m sure it will be close again. It's down to us to go out there and show we are the best, I suppose.

"I don't like making predictions but we've got a strong team, we've improved our squad, it's stronger. The new guys are settling in and once they do, we'll be better for it."

Manchester City, who will play Arsenal in the Community Shield on 10th August, will begin their Premier League campaign with an away fixture against Newcastle United a week later.
