Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has issued a stern warning to Connor Wickham and said that the striker must sign a new contract.

Wickham, who joined the Black Cats from Ipswich Town in 2011, spent last season on loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, before returning to fire Sunderland to Premier League safety.

The 21-year-old has only one year left on his contract with Sunderland and is dithering on signing a new deal, something which is occupying Poyet's thoughts.

“For me, Connor’s situation is clear”, Poyet was quoted as saying by ITV.

The Sunderland manager has made it clear that Wickham has to sign a new contract or he will be forced to sell the striker this summer to recoup some of the money that the club paid for him.
